Meet the Cardiologists

The St Vincent’s Cardiology Service is supported by a collaborative network of experienced specialist and sub specialty cardiology service providers including Dr Bob Ayres from Downs Cardiac Clinic; Drs Roess Pascoe and Loretta Carr from Hearts 1st and Dr Stephen Cox and Dr Tony Rafter from Heart Care Partners.

Dr Richard (Bob) Ayres

Dr Bob Ayres has a special interest in general cardiology, coronary angiography and echocardiography. Dr Ayres completed his advanced training in cardiology at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide before spending two years at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, USA. He commenced private practice in Toowoomba in 1993 and until 2002, travelled to The Wesley Hospital and Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane to do coronary angiograms. Since this time coronary angiograms have been performed in Toowoomba.

Dr Roess Pascoe

Dr Roess Pascoe established Hearts 1st in 1999 to provide high quality, non-invasive cardiac testing for patients. He has a special interest in cutting-edge echocardiography technology and continues to apply these advancements to his clinical practice. Dr Pascoe completed his cardiology training at Prince Charles Hospital and continued as a consultant at Prince Charles and Royal Brisbane Hospital where he was responsible for initiating the RBH Transoesophageal Echo Service. Dr Pascoe then completed a two year research fellowship in the USA at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr Loretta Carr

Dr Loretta Carr has specialised training in multi-modality cardiovascular imaging encompassing transthoracic echo, transoesophageal echo, exercise stress echo and dobutamine stress echo as well as cardiovascular CT and cardiac MRI. Dr Carr completed her training in cardiology at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s and the Princess Alexandra Hospitals. She then joined Hearts 1st where she completed a two-year echocardiography and cardiac imaging fellowship.

Dr Peter Moore

Dr Peter Moore is a cardiologist with subspecialty training in interventional cardiology. He graduated from the University of Queensland medical school with First Class Honours and a University Medal in 2008. He undertook his advanced training in Cardiology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, and attained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2015. He subsequently undertook two interventional cardiology fellowships: at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane in 2016; and the Royal Jubilee Hospital and Victoria Heart Institute Foundation, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 2017-18. 

Dr Moore works from The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane and visits Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast. 

Dr Stephen Cox

Dr Cox completed cardiology training in Brisbane and spent two years in Boston at the Lahey Clinic. His cardiac catheterisation skills include acute infarct angioplasty and elective stenting as well as the treatment of structural heart defects using closure devices (PFO,/ASD/VSD) and post-surgery paravalvular leaks). HeartCare Partners at the Wesley have commenced a percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVR) Program and Dr Cox is part of that programme along with other HeartCare Partners cardiologists.

Dr Tony Rafter

Dr Rafter specialises in interventional cardiology and has a special interest in invasive assessment of functional ischaemia and intravascular imaging. He is the Director of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories at the Wesley Hospital and was involved in setting up the Trans Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)Program at The Wesley Hospital and remains an active member of the Structural Heart Team.
