Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The Clive Berghofer Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides an outstanding service to patients who require critical care, close monitoring and intensive nursing.

The six-bed unit offers one-on-one care. Patients admitted to the ICU are usually extremely unwell or need monitoring and care immediately after surgery. Once patients have been stabilised they can be moved to one of the wards.

One of Australia’s best ICUs

The unit has been ranked by the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) as one of the top three performing ICUs in Australia and New Zealand for the last two years.

The Intensive Care Unit was built in 2002 after a generous donation from local land developer and philanthropist Clive Berghofer OAM.

Patient care

The ICU consultant is responsible for your overall care while in the unit.

While in ICU patients are cared for by highly trained nurses and doctors and have access to a full quota of allied health professionals as well as the hospital’s pastoral care team every day or as required.

Your treating doctor will be consulted for specific needs until you go to the ward, when they will take over your care.

The ICU consultant will do rounds every morning with the Resident House Officer and the plan for the day formulated. We have a Resident House Officer in the unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The ICU consultants will keep the patient and family members up to date with what is happening. They are available for family conferences and to answer any questions you may have if the nurse or House officer is unable to answer them for you.

Visiting ICU patients

Visiting hours are from 8.30 am – 8.30 pm. The unit has its own lounge area, as only one or two family members (depending on the patient) are allowed into the ICU at any time.

You may be asked to wait in the lounge if the doctors are doing the ward round, if a procedure is being performed, or if the patient is showering or having tests or therapy.

The ICU is located on ground level near the Entrance 2 foyer. The contact phone number for the unit is 07 4690 4494.
